GNK Dinamo Zagreb has publicly congratulated Filip Hrgović on winning a world boxing championship. The club sent a message of support to the Croatian champion via its official social media channels on Saturday evening following his major victory in London.
Hrgović defeated the previously undefeated British boxer Moses Itaumu by technical knockout in the ninth round at a packed O2 Arena. He thus became the new IBF world heavyweight champion. In its post, Dinamo quoted Hrgović's pre-fight words: "And new… From Zagreb, Croatia!". "Filip, heartfelt congratulations!" wrote the Zagreb club, as reported by Index.hr Sport.
How did the title fight unfold?
The fight started extremely tough for Hrgović. Moses Itaumu sent him to the canvas as early as the second round. The British boxer was faster and more precise for most of the rounds, but Hrgović endured his attacks and waited for his chance. The turning point came in the ninth round when the Croatian launched an aggressive assault.
Hrgović pressed Itaumu against the ropes and delivered a series of heavy punches. Referee Howard Foster then stopped the fight and declared a technical knockout. This is the biggest title in Filip Hrgović's professional career, who now holds a record of 21 wins and one loss.
Where does Dinamo stand domestically?
While Hrgović was celebrating in London, Dinamo has started its new HNL season solidly. After four matches played, the Blues have 10 points. They currently occupy second place in the SuperSport Croatian Football League, just two points behind leaders NK Varaždin.
