GNK Dinamo Zagreb failed to secure a win in their 5th round HNL match, drawing 2:2 with Istra in Pula. Their first dropped points of the season came at the Aldo Drosina stadium on Saturday, with the hosts leading twice but Dinamo equalizing on both occasions.
Despite being clear favourites and the defending champions, the Blues could not take all three points. Coach Mario Kovačević, however, was not dissatisfied with the final outcome. "I'm not dissatisfied, we had two difficult matches behind us," Kovačević told Gol.hr. Dinamo came into the match without the injured Galešić but fielded their strongest available team.
Why was Kovačević satisfied?
Mario Kovačević admitted his team's first half was poor, describing it as "sleepy". Nevertheless, the reaction in the second half and the character shown in fighting for a point pleased the coach. He singled out the goalkeeper's contribution.
"I'm happy for Nevistić and his save, I think that was key for the match and it saved us," Kovačević stated. Nevistić made a decisive stop in the 78th minute after a clear chance for Istra's attacker Antonio Maurić. With the score at 2:1 for Dinamo, that goal could have decided the match.
How did the match unfold?
Istra surprised with an early goal, but Dinamo quickly equalized. The hosts took the lead again in the second half, which once more spurred the visitors into action. The final 2:2 scoreline remained until the end. Kovačević described Istra's second goal as "incredible".
Despite the point dropped in Pula, Dinamo still leads the HNL table with 9 points from three played matches. They have a perfect win-loss record and a +8 goal difference (9 scored, 1 conceded). Their last result was a 2:0 win against Slaven Belupo on July 31st. Their current form over the last three matches is 2 wins and 1 draw (WDW).
What does this match mean for Dinamo?
The draw in Pula ended Dinamo's perfect start to the season but did not disrupt their position at the top. The team remains unbeaten in the league. This was the third match in a short period after two previous ones that Kovačević labelled as difficult.
Dinamo had to show character to get out of tough situations away from home. Although the quality wasn't at its peak, the point was secured thanks to key individuals. This shows the squad's depth and ability to fight even in unfavourable conditions.

Dinamo now turns to the next challenge in the HNL. In the 6th round, they will host Gorica at Maksimir. Istra will visit Varaždin in the same round. However, Dinamo's next major test will be an away match against second-placed Osijek on September 12th.
