GNK Dinamo Zagreb secured a significant financial windfall of €450,000 with their Europa League victory on Tuesday. Dion Drena Beljo converted a 96th-minute penalty to seal a 1-0 win over Belgium's Anderlecht, handing the team their first group stage win of the season.
The three points from the second matchday also brought the concrete prize money UEFA awards for each group stage victory. For the draw in the first match against Hapoel Beer Sheva, Dinamo had already received €150,000, bringing the total after two matches to €600,000. UEFA awards no prize money for defeats, making every point earned even more valuable.
This win also carries sporting importance as Dinamo have collected four points after 180 minutes of group stage play. It places the team in a good position in the fight for progression to the knockout phase. Domestically, Dinamo currently sit third in the HNL with 16 points from eight matches, three points behind leaders Hajduk Split.
Dion Drena Beljo delivers the points
The key player of the evening was Dion Drena Beljo, whose penalty decided the match. For Dinamo's striker, it was already his tenth goal in seven appearances this season, making him the team's top scorer. His form will be a cornerstone for the continuation of the league campaign.
Dinamo's next match is on Wednesday, an away fixture against Slaven Belupo in the 9th round of the HNL. The match in Koprivnica kicks off at 17:00.
The Europa League win brings not only immediate financial benefit. Every point earned in the group will influence the final UEFA distribution of funds at the end of the season, alongside additional bonuses dependent on final placement. Dinamo have six more group matches to further increase their budget.
