GNK Dinamo Zagreb's Champions League hopes ended in a 3-1 defeat to Viking, with a controversial penalty decision central to the playoff second leg. Spanish referee José María Sánchez Martínez awarded a spot-kick to the Norwegian champions in the 18th minute following a VAR review, changing the complexion of the tie. Dinamo had taken an early lead through Arber Hoxha in the 9th minute, but the equalizer from the penalty spot paved the way for two more Viking goals and a place in the Champions League group stage for the hosts.

The Croatian champions started brightly in Norway and found an early breakthrough. In the 18th minute, following a throw-in from the right by Zlatko Tripić, the ball struck the hand of Dinamo defender Scott McKenna in a crowded penalty area. Referee Martínez did not initially blow his whistle, but the VAR room instructed him to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. After the review, the referee pointed to the spot. "The VAR room called him to review the footage," notes Index.hr. Tripić converted the resulting penalty, and Dinamo never truly recovered from the setback.

The loss in Norway means Dinamo will continue their European campaign in the Europa League instead of the elite competition. This represents a significant financial blow, as Champions League qualification brings substantially higher revenue from TV rights and UEFA prize money. Currently, according to our live data, Dinamo sits second in the Croatian First League table, three points behind leaders Hajduk Split but with a game in hand.

Despite the elimination, several Dinamo players are in good form. Arber Hoxha, who scored in Norway, now has three goals in five official appearances this season. In defense, experienced Josip Šutalo and midfielder Martin Baturina remain pillars of the team. Baturina is, according to our stats page, one of the league's leading assist providers. Coach Sergej Jakirović must now quickly shift focus to the domestic league and prepare his squad for the Europa League, where they will face quality opposition. The full squad list is always available on our squad page.

Dinamo will continue their European journey in the Europa League group stage, the draw for which will be held shortly. In the Croatian Football League, the next challenge is an away match against Gorica in the 7th round, scheduled for September 13th. This will be an opportunity for the team to show character and return to winning ways after a tough European night. The squad possesses enough quality to compete on both fronts, and Jakirović's starting eleven heavily relies on a mix of experienced players and young talents like Hoxha. Dinamo has currently scored 14 goals in six league matches played.
